Founded in 1986, NASKA traces its roots back to 1977 when Karate Illustrated Magazine began publishing competitor rankings to bring structure to tournament karate in the United States. Over the years, the magazine expanded its rating system to include athletes and tournaments, helping establish standards across the sport.

When Karate Illustrated ended its rating program in 1986, organizers of the top-rated tournaments united to preserve and grow the system. Promoters from events such as the Battle of Atlanta, US Open, Diamond Nationals, New England Open, and others formed the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA).

Since then, NASKA has become the leading organization in Open Tournament Sport Karate, sanctioning North America's most prestigious tournaments and providing a platform for athletes to showcase, innovate, and develop their skills. Today, NASKA continues to shape the future of sport karate while honoring the champions who have contributed to its success.
